Ten years ago today I was leading IFAW's Animal Rescue efforts when Hurricane Katrina struck the Louisiana coast.

The days and weeks after the storm were an adrenaline fuelled blur of tragedies and small triumphs.

Approximately 250,000 animals were displaced or killed. During the disaster, our staff and volunteers assisted in the rescue, care and transport of at least 7,000 animals. Thousands were later housed at shelters across the region including at the Louisiana State University shelter IFAW donors helped support.

I remember the heat, chaos and confusion. I remember the rescue vehicles waiting to unload hundreds of emaciated, exhausted animals each evening. But most of all, I remember one woman who changed my perspective forever. Read more about this experience.

There were many people who refused to evacuate because they'd have to strand their animals to an unknown fate. Can you imagine fleeing from your home and leaving your animals behind? I can't.

Remarkably, thanks to our generous donors, our teams were able to assist in the rescue, care and transport of thousands of animals. We even carried out human rescues, including five people trapped in their homes, and a 70 year old who suffered a stroke.

Katrina exposed our weaknesses. It sharpened our strengths. And it inspired a new way of working together that's already saved countless more lives around the world.

As you read this, IFAW staff are in Louisiana helping to lead advanced training for animal rescue responders to ensure we're ready to help when disaster strikes next.
